Jesse Beams and Donald Kupke

Dr. Beams is seen here with Dr. Donald Kupke of the Biochemistry
Department of the University of Virginia. Beams and Kupke worked for
many years together on some biological applications of Beams' magnetic
suspension techniques. They developed techniques for measuring
densities and viscosities of very small volumes of aqueous solutions.
They were the first to measure kinetic viscosities of solutions less
than 1/2 ML in volume. They were also the first to develop a magnetic
suspension osmometer for measuring osmotic pressure. Also, Beams,
Kupke, and their students performed most of the advanced developmental
work on the
magnetically suspended ultracentrifuge.
